A significant proportion of the reported forcible rape cases in Israel are committed against young female tourists.
Abstract
Extended media coverage of these cases emphasizes the severe punishments imposed on rapists, implying that the justice system regards raping a tourist as a more serious crime than raping an Israeli woman. Similar statements are documented in judicial decisions. Reasons given include not only damage to the victims, but also to the state of Israel and to the tourist industry. The analysis of the 1982-83 sentences passed on the 164 persons charged with forcible rape convicted in Israeli courts shows an unexpected finding that none of the variables with a significant impact on the severity of the sentence is directly related to the victim. 2 tables and 28 references.
