This issue examines the campus Crime Stoppers program and how to establish an effective and appropriate reward schedule for campus crime tipsters.
Abstract
One of the most effective and least costly options in fighting crime on college campuses is the campus chapter of Crime Stoppers. The campus Crime Stoppers allows students and staff to report crime anonymously via an advertised phone tip line. The program is effective in solving and preventing crime because of the focus on student participation. The nucleus of the organization is the student Board of Directors of the campus Crime Stoppers program. The Board determines reward amounts for tipsters based on an appropriate reward schedule. Tipsters are referred to only by an assigned code number to ensure their anonymity. One of the biggest challenges is to determine and set reward amounts for tipsters. This article examines the goals in setting the reward schedule, managing the reward schedule, and undertaking payments from reward schedules or the actual payout procedure.
