INCREASED LEGAL AID AND A PRISON OMBUDSMAN ARE RECOMMENDED AS TWO REALISTIC WAYS TO ARTICULATE AND RESOLVE PRISONER GRIEVANCES.
Abstract
RECENT COURT DECISIONS, PARTICULARLY JOHNSON V. AVERY, POINT TOWARD THE INMATE'S INCREASING RIGHT OF REDRESS TO THE COURTS. AN IN-HOUSE CIVIL AND CRIMINAL LEGAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM STAFFED BY FULL TIME ATTORNEYS SHOULD BE A PART OF THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM'S REHABILITATIVE EFFORTS. THE USE OF AN INTERMEDIARY BETWEEN INMATE AND PRISON ADMINISTRATION WOULD ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO A MORE HUMANE AND SUCCESSFUL PRISON SYSTEM.
