The Emertac from Thompson Hummer is a highly modified emergency tactical Hummer designed for use by either SWAT Teams or EMS/rescue teams; the Emertac is the most unique law enforcement specialty vehicle on the market.
The vehicle has a 16-inch ground clearance full-time 4-wheel drive. Each axle has a torque-sensing differential so that power is distributed equally to all four wheels. Power comes from the General Motors 6.5-liter V8 fuel-injected diesel engine. The 11-gauge double-wall aluminum personnel body is fabricated and installed directly onto the chassis. A ballistic shield is mounted on the inside of the rear door for quick deployment. The vehicle can support a nine-officer crew. The Emertac is also easy to drive. It has a shorter turning radius than a conventional pickup truck. It easily cruises at 70 miles per hour and can accelerate fast enough to merge safely onto an expressway. It is stable both on and off the road. Ergonomics are also well handled. The vehicle costs an average of $150,000 with ballistic protection. It will last 2 decades or more with proper maintenance and can serve as a remote command post or crime-scene vehicle as well as in emergency operations. Photographs
