Each State has its own legislation regarding the rights of non-resident, off-duty policemen to carry weapons in its jurisdiction. In addition, there are often stricter local ordinances governing legal methods of carrying handguns.
Abstract
Police officers who plan to carry weapons with them under these circumstances are advised to carry their police identification and store their unloaded guns in car trunks or in checked luggage when traveling by air. The information contained in this article cannot be considered a legal opinion of either the States or the journal. A brief description of the regulations of each State is accompanied by a state-by-state chart which notes the legality of off-duty officers carrying weapons; whether permits are required; and whether carrying weapons is legal when they are exposed or concealed on a person, in a vehicle, in a trunk, or in a glove compartment.
