In this video, kids provide advice to other kids about how to "surf" the Internet in a manner that keeps them safe and free from various types of harm.
Abstract
In the first part of the video, kids are asked how they typically use the Internet. The answers given most often are to play games, send e-mail to friends and distant relatives, and to do homework and research projects. The video then proceeds to give advice to kids about how to avoid uncomfortable and potentially harmful situations while surfing the Internet. In searching the Internet for information on various subjects, particularly when seeking pictures, enticing "popups" or pornographic pictures may be encountered. When this happens, kids are advised to go to their parents or a trusted adult to determine how to deal with these situations. Kids are instructed in how to close popups and how to eliminate "cookies" that may cause popups to recur. Kids are also advised to ignore popups that offer attractive "freebies" that require the giving of personal information and an e-mail address. Regarding e-mail receptions, kids are advised not to open attachments that come from unknown sources, since they may contain viruses that can damage the computer. A portion of the video is devoted to "chat room" protocol. Kids are advised to never provide personal information, never trust that chat-room participants are telling the truth about themselves, and never meet with a chat-room participant in person. Overall, kids are advised to consult with their parents and a trusted adult when they encounter something unfamiliar or uncomfortable on the Internet.
