THE SECOND IN A THREE-VOLUME SERIES, THIS DOCUMENT IS A COMPENDIUM OF INFORMATION COMPILED FROM THE 1974 OFFENSE REPORTS OF THIRTEEN LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES FOR THE COUNTYWIDE CAPER SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE CAPER SYSTEM IS A METHOD FOR GATHERING, STORING, AND ANALYZING FACTUAL INFORMATION ON ALL REPORTED CRIMES IN THE COUNTY. IT IS INTENDED FOR USE IN CRIME ANALYSIS, PROJECT EVALUATION, AND RESEARCH. THE FIRST VOLUME IN THIS SERIES (NCJ-35855) PRESENTS AN OVERVIEW OF THE ACTIVITIES, PROBLEMS, OPERATIONS, AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE CAPER SYSTEM. THIS SECOND VOLUME CONTAINS CRIME DATA, CRIME MAPS, AND A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE CAPER FUNCTIONS. A SECTION ON HOW TO USE CAPER DATA IS PROVIDED; IT INCLUDES TECHNICAL INFORMATION, DEFINITIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USERS OF THE DATA. THE FINAL SECTION OF THIS REPORT PRESENTS SEVERAL DATA TABLES WHICH ARE ORGANIZED BY CRIME TYPE AND JURISDICTION TO FACILITATE THE DIAGNOSIS OF CRIME SPECIFIC PROBLEMS. THE CRIMES ARE ORDERED GENERALLY ACCORDING TO SEVERITY. AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH CRIME TYPE IS AN INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT PRESENTING SPECIFIC DEFINITIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS OF THE DATA THEREIN. THIS SECTION CONCLUDES WITH A SERIES OF MAPS WHICH EXEMPLIFY THE USE OF GEOGRAPHICAL DATA WITHIN THE DATA BASE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
