This report on the second Islington Crime Survey (England) provides data on crime victimization as well as public perceptions of crime and the police, followed by policy recommendations for crime control.
Abstract
This second crime survey, developed at the Centre for Criminology, widens the focus on community problems to include a range of antisocial behavior and harassment as well as problems of multiagency intervention and service delivery. It is intended to provide a social audit of the community. This 1989 survey used a target sample of 2,160 households, derived from the Post Office Address file. A total of 1,621 questionnaires were completed. The victimization data presented cover burglary, vandalism, theft from the person, physical assault, and sexual abuse. Policy implications are drawn from the findings for each offense. Data also cover public perceptions of various social problems, including crime, poor housing, unemployment, racial tension, environmental problems, working conditions, schools, and police behavior. A chapter focuses on public perceptions of police, including the public's prioritization of police tasks and their confidence in the police. Data also cover crime prevention and action against crime. Concluding chapters present a crime policy for the city that features multiagency intervention for specific offenses and policy recommendations in various areas. 540-item bibliography.
