The construction of tunnels requires specialized technology and security measures to prevent fire and crime.
Abstract
Security must be considered at a tunnel's design stage in order to assure safety through the appropriate selection of construction materials and equipment. Rescue teams dispatched to tunnels must be able to solve two kinds of problems: (1) normal intervention, simply evacuating the tunnel and bringing the injured to safety; and (2) complicated intervention, relating to the combustion of toxic substances and other difficulties associated with a fire. Rescue operations must be coordinated from a control center and be accomplished quickly and efficiently, and fire detectors must be linked to the control center. Security in railway tunnels differs substantially from security in land and underwater tunnels. Procedures to follow in assuring railway and underwater tunnel safety are described.
