This reference handbook for British private security officers covers the law violations likely to be encountered by the security officer, the security officer's powers, and the skills required in the performance of security officer duties.
Abstract
The British law of trespass is covered in a separate section, since it is not a criminal offense. The discussion considers the factors to be noted when deciding whether a person is a mere trespasser or is on the premises for a criminal objective. Aspects of the criminal law likely to be encountered in a security officer's duties are explained under the offenses of theft, robbery, burglary, motor vehicle theft, being equipped for theft, criminal damage, and assault. Also discussed are a security officer's powers of search and arrest. Security officer procedures for informing a suspect of his legal rights upon arrest are described as well. Information helpful to the security officer who may be called on to testify in court is provided. Instructions are given to security officers for actions in the areas of the patrol of premises, fire protection, bomb threats, use of notebooks, writing reports, and first aid. The handbook is also recommended as an aid in training officers.
