With the heightened awareness of campus crime and the perceived threat of unauthorized entry into educational facilities, some universities and colleges are using electronic card access systems for residence halls.
Abstract
The three most popular electronic card access options are a picture ID that allows students to use card readers, a plain card with no identifying characteristics, and a semiconductor microchip touch entry device. The location of card or device readers is important, and card access systems require more than hardware and software. Consideration must also be paid to system maintenance and human monitoring. Further, provisions need to be established for dealing with lost or stolen cards, card reader vandalism and tampering, and power failures.
