Abstract
THE AUTHOR INVESTIGATES USE OF POLICE DISCRETION IN SEVERAL COMMON OFFENSES, INCLUDING TRAFFIC OFFENSES, VICTIMLESS CRIMES, DRUG ADDICTION, MINOR JUVENILE OFFENSES, SHOPLIFTING, AND PUBLIC DEMONSTRATIONS. SEVERAL FACTORS WHICH MAY INFLUENCE THE POLICE OFFICER'S DISCRETIONARY DECISION ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. AMONG THESE ARE PUBLIC OPINION ON THE LAW, CURRENT PUBLIC ATTITUDES, THE BACKGROUND OF THE OFFENDER, CURRENT LEGAL THINKING ON THE PARTICULAR LAW IN QUESTION, AN THE EFFECT OF ARREST ON THE OFFENDER.
