This study examined school professional's awareness of the problem of child maltreatment in Saudi Arabia and the country's efforts to combat the problem and implement Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Abstract
The study found that about one-third of school professionals in Saudi Arabia had a low-level of awareness of the problem of child maltreatment, and only 1.9 percent of them had ever attended any sort of specific training on the problem. The study also found that almost 70 percent of the school professionals who had not attended training were willing to attend training in the future. In addition, only 22 percent of school professionals reported being aware of Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which states that children have the right to be protected from all forms of violence. The study examined the extent to which school professionals in Saudi Arabia were aware of the problem of child maltreatment and the country's efforts to combat the problem and implement Article 19 of the UNCRC. Data for the study were obtained from a randomly selected sample of school professionals (n=3,777) who completed a self-administered questionnaire on the problem of child maltreatment. The findings indicate that while a majority of school professionals in Saudi Arabia have a low to intermediate awareness of the problem of child maltreatment, and the ratification and implementation of the UNCRC, the majority are willing to attend training programs to combat the problem.
