SUCCESS IN THE ARMED SERVICES IS CORRELATED WITH THE PRESERVICE CONFINEMENT EXPERIENCE OF A SAMPLE OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS.
Abstract
A REVIEW AND COMPARISON OF THE REGULATIONS COVERING REJECTIONS FOR MORAL OR CHARACTER REASONS FOR THE ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE AND MARINES IS PRESENTED. THE PROCEDURES PRESCRIBED FOR EVALUATING FORMER JUVENILE DELINQUENTS SHOW SUBSTANTIAL VARIATIONS IN EXPLICITNESS AND IN ACTION TO BE TAKEN. FOLLOW-UP INFORMATION IN RELATION TO THE ARMED SERVICES WAS OBTAINED FOR TWO URBAN SAMPLES OF FORMER JUVENILE DELINQUENTS LOCATED IN MINNESOTA AND IN ANOTHER PART OF THE COUNTRY. INFORMATION IS FIRST PRESENTED ABOUT FACTORS RELATED TO MORAL REJECTIONS OF THOSE WITH JUVENILE COURT RECORDS. THE PREDICTION OF OUTCOME IN SERVICE IS CONFINED TO INFORMATION CONCERNING DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF LOCAL, STATE, AND FEDERAL JUVENILE CONFINEMENT. A DETAILED EXAMINATION IS MADE OF THE PREDICTIVE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE FOR THE MINNESOTA SAMPLE, FOR WHICH COMPLETE INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE. THE POSSIBLE IMPLICATIONS OF THESE RESULTS FOR THE EVALUATION OF FORMER DELINQUENTS ARE DISCUSSED.
