STUDY SHOWING PERCENTAGES OF FORMER JUVENILE OFFENDERS IN VARIOUS CATEGORIES OF MILITARY SERVICE, RANGING FROM COMPARISONS TO AN EARLIER STUDY.
Abstract
A SAMPLE OF FORMER JUVENILE DELINQUENTS FROM A MINNESOTA CITY HAS BEEN FOLLOWED UP THROUGH SELECTIVE SERVICE RECORDS AND SERVICE RECORDS OF THE ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE AND MARINES. CASES INCLUDE ALL THOSE INDIVIDUALS BORN OVER AN EIGHT-YEAR INTERVAL WHO HAD EXHIBITED DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR SERIOUS ENOUGH TO RESULT IN FILES BEING MADE FOR THEM. FROM AN ORIGINAL SAMPLE OF APPROXIAMTELY 2800 CASES, 1963 (70 PER CENT) WERE FOUND IN SELECTIVE SERVICE RECORDS. OF THESE, 1347 (68.6 PER CENT) WERE IN SERVICE WHILE 616 (31.4 PER CENT) WERE REJECTED OR DEFERRED. TABLES OF REASONS FOR REJECTION AND DEFERRAL, THE NUMBERS ENTERING DIFFERENT BRANCHES OF SERVICE, AND OUTCOMES IN SERVICE ARE PRESENTED BOTH FOR THIS SAMPLE AND FOR AN EARLIER SAMPLE FROM ANOTHER MINNESOTA CITY. OUTCOME IN THE ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE, AND MARINES IS TABLED FOR FOUR CATEGORIES RANGING FROM 'PROMOTED' TO UNSATISFACTORY (PRIMARILY AS INDICATED BY TYPE OF DISCHARGE). A COMPARISON IS MADE BY AGE AT ENTRANCE (19 OR LESS VS 20 OR MORE) AND COMPONENT (ENLISTED VS INDUCTED) FOR THE TWO MINNESOTA ARMY SAMPLES, SEPARATELY AND COMBINED. A SIMILAR BREAKDOWN BASED ON AGE AT ENTRANCE ONLY IS PRESENTED FOR THE NAVY, AIR FORCE AND MARINES FOR THE COMBINED SAMPLES (MINNESOTA). A COMBINATION OF BOTH SAMPLES INCLUDING ALL SERVICES SHOWED THAT ONLY 18.4 PER CENT WERE DEFINITELY UNSATISFACTORY. THERE WAS LITTLE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO SAMPLES. THERE WAS GREATER INTER-SAMPLE DIFFERENCE IN THE PROPORTION ACHIEVING NON-COMMISSIONED STATUS, 41.5 FOR THE EARLIER SAMPLE. A GRAPHIC PRESENTATION IS GIVEN OF A THIRD DELINQUENT GROUP AND A CONTROL FROM ANOTHER STATE, DESCRIBED IN AN EARLIER REPORT. OF THOSE WITH UNSATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE, A LARGE PERCENTAGE WERE FOUND TO BE FROM THE ENLISTED, UNDER 19 YEARS OF AGE CATEGORY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
