This book contains more than 90 documents that review the definition of sexual harassment and the developing awareness of the concept in the late 20th century.
Abstract
The book provides a comprehensive history that explores legal prohibitions on sexual harassment, examines important historical cases, and focuses on current areas of controversy such as same-sex harassment and free speech issues. It reviews sexual harassment as a form of sex discrimination and as a civil wrong and examines conflicts between sexual harassment and free speech. Each document is accompanied by an explanatory introduction to help high school and college students understand how the document fits into larger trends. The book is divided into six sections: (1) what sexual harassment is and why it is considered an illegal form of sex discrimination; (2,3,4) sexual harassment as it has arisen in the workplace, the military, and educational institutions; (5) ways the law is expanding beyond these areas, such as in the context of housing; and (6) four 1998 Supreme Court decisions dealing with sexual harassment issues.
