Volume III of "Sharing Ideas & Resources to Keep Our Nation's Schools Safe" profiles programs and strategies at the national, State, and local levels designed to make schools safe.

Abstract

Programs at the national level designed to address school safety issues include the work of the National White Collar Crime Center, the National Crime Prevention Council, and the national Center for Campus Public Safety. Efforts at the State level focus on Illinois, Alabama, and Michigan. Community efforts include smartphone apps on school safety, police officers in classrooms, gunshot detection systems, and job-specific school safety training. Some of the programs described address specific school safety issues, such a bullying, and others involve collaboration among schools, police, and the community in developing a comprehensive approach to school safety. Attention is also given to technologies that can improve school security.
