THAT JUVENILE CRIME HAS INCREASED BOTH IN FORMS AND FREQUENCY, WAS EVALUATED BY COMPARING TWO YEARS (1951 AND 1973) OF COURT STATISTICS.
Abstract
OVER AN APPROXIMATE TWENTY-YEAR PERIOD, CONTEMPORARY ADOLESCENT CRIME HAD SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED FOR BOTH MALES AND FEMALES, IN BOTH NUMBER OF OFFENSES AND TYPES OF INFRACTIONS. FEMALE ADOLESCENT CRIME INCREASED APPROXIMATELY TWICE AS FAST AS MALE ADOLESCENT CRIME, BECOMING MORE AGGRESSIVE IN NATURE. INCREASES IN THE CONTEMPORARY ADOLESCENT POPULATION; FAILURE OF CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS; AND INCREASING FACILITATING CONDITIONS, SUCH AS BLOCKAGE OF ADOLESCENT ECONOMIC POWER AND BREAKDOWN OF TRADITIONAL SEX ROLES LEAD TO THE PREDICTION THAT JUVENILE CRIME WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE.
