SURVEY DATA ON SHOPLIFTING BASED ON ACTUAL APPREHENSIONS IN SUPERMARKETS AND DRUGSTORES, AND DISCUSSION OF SCOPE OF PROBLEM AND CONSUMER INVOLVEMENT IN ITS CONTROL.
Abstract
THE DATA PROVIDED INCLUDE 15,542 CASES FROM 632 SUPERMARKETS AND 2,651 CASES FROM 84 DRUGSTORES. THE DATA ANALYSES COMPARE MALE AND FEMALE, ADULT AND JUVENILE, AND JUVENILE MALE VERSUS JUVENILE FEMALE ACTIVITY. DATA ARE ALSO PROVIDED ON SHOPLIFTING BY MONTH, DAY OF WEEK, AND TIME OF DAY, AS WELL AS ON THE CATEGORIES OF MERCHANDISE STOLEN AND METHOD OF OPERATION. THE ESTIMATE THAT EACH STORE WAS VICTIMIZED AT LEAST SIX TIMES DAILY LED TO AN ESTIMATED ANNUAL LOSS OF OVER SIX MILLION DOLLARS FOR THE 716 STORES. A TEN POINT PROGRAM FOR CUSTOMER INVOLVEMENT IN SHOPLIFTING PREVENTION IS PROPOSED.
