STATISTICAL STUDY OF A RANDOM SAMPLE OF 1,549 SHOPLIFTERS APPREHENDED BY A LARGE DEPARTMENT STORE IN THE NETHERLANDS BETWEEN 1967 AND 1970.
Abstract
ANALYSIS OF THE STATISTICS REGARDING SEX, AGE, SOCIAL STATUS, AND VALUE OF THE ARTICLES STOLEN, ETC., LED TO THE CONCLUSION THAT SHOPLIFTING IS NO LONGER A TYPICAL FEMALE OFFENSE. SHOPLIFTING IS BEING COMMITTED INCREASINGLY BY GROWN MEN. NO PREVALENCE OF GROUPS OR GANGS OF JUVENILES AMONG THE SHOPLIFTERS COULD BE OBSERVED. THE COMMERICAL AND MORAL DILEMMAS IN WHICH BUSINESSES FIND THEMSELVES IN TRYING TO PREVENT SHOPLIFTING ARE DISCUSSED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) --IN DUTCH
