This study examined the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) component items in a Web-based study of young drinkers.
Abstract
The existing briefer versions of the AUDIT are not more highly predictive of total AUDIT scores in this Web-based study of young drinkers than alternative combinations, and the AUDIT-C in particular is much weaker. Existing brief versions are also less internally consistent than novel combinations for the same number of items. These findings have implications for their use as online screening tools for young drinkers. Data were collected from 167 young people using 3 recruitment methods: first, online regulated chat rooms and other forums for young people and selected Web sites were given brief introductory text to post on their site which included a link to a screening questionnaire; second, youth workers working with young people in colleges and other environments were contacted with this same material in order to encourage study participation among young people they knew; finally, invitations to King’s College London students to participate were sent by e-mail circular.
