PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE OF SKYJACKERS, DRAWING ON THE EXPERIENCE OF A U.S. PSYCHIATRIST WHO HAS STUDIED THIS PHENOMENON.
Abstract
PSYCHIATRIST DAVID HUBBARD BELIEVES THAT IN MOST CASES SKYJACKERS ARE PARANOID, SUICIDAL SCHIZOPHRENICS TO WHOM THE THREAT OF DEATH IS NOT A DETERRENT, BUT A STIMULUS. IN HIS EXPERIENCE, THEY ARE WEAK MEN WHO HAVE FAILED AT LIFE AND LOVE. ACCORDING TO HUBBARD, THE GREATEST DETERRENT TO SKYJACKING WOULD BE AN INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT TO SEND THE AIR PIRATES BACK TO THE COUNTRY WHERE THEY COMMITTED THEIR CRIME. ANOTHER DETERRENT THAT HUBBARD ADVOCATED IS ELIMINATION OF THE DEATH PENALTY SO THAT SKYJACKING CANNOT BE UNDERTAKEN AS A FORM OF UNCONCIOUS SUICIDE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
