'CAR AND DRIVER' ROAD-TESTS 12 RADAR DETECTORS.
Abstract
THE DEVICES IN QUESTION FERRET OUT POLICE RADAR IN TIME FOR THE SPEEDING DRIVER TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION. OPPOSITION TO THE 55-MILE-PER-HOUR SPEED LIMIT (DESCRIBED AS A 'FEDERALLY MANDATED DAM HOLDING UP THE NATURAL FLOW OF TRAFFIC ON OUR TURNPIKES AND INTERSTATES') HAS TURNED THE MANUFACTURE OF RADAR DETECTORS INTO A GROWTH INDUSTRY. THE STATE OF THE ART IN DETECTOR MANUFACTURE IS SUCH THAT SPEEDING DRIVERS NEED NO LONGER RELY ON THEIR CITIZENS' BAND RADIOS TO AVOID BEING TICKETED. THE ARTICLE EXPLAINS HOW POLICE RADAR WORKS (ESPECIALLY THE SUPPOSEDLY DETECTOR-PROOF KUSTOM SIGNALS KR11 DEVICE), HOW THE DETECTORS WORK, AND HOW THE FIELD TEST WAS CONDUCTED. IT DESCRIBES THE PRICE, DIMENSIONS, WEIGHT, RADIO FREQUENCY, AND PERFORMANCE OF 12 DETECTORS: BEARFINDER TWO PLUS TWO, DOUBLE NICKEL, ESCORT, FOX II XK, FUZZBUSTER II MULTI-BAND, HAWK EYE, LONG RANGE SUPER SNOOPER, RADAR SENTRY XK, SUPER BUSTER MODEL RD77, SUPER ELIMINATOR MODEL X-K, WHISTLER RADAR EYE, AND X-KALIBUR. THE DEVICES' RANGE AND OVERHILL ACTION AGAINST X-BAND AND K-BAND POLICE RADAR ARE RATED. READERS ARE OFFERED ADVICE ON HOW TO DECIDE WHICH DETECTOR TO BUY. PICTURES OF THE DETECTORS ARE INCLUDED.
