SEVERAL METHODS OF STOPPING A FLEEING CAR WERE TESTED, INCLUDING FIRING AT THE CAR WITH HANDGUNS, FIRING TEAR GAS CANNISTERS, AND FIRING WITH A 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN.
Abstract
HANDGUNS WERE FOUND TO HAVE ALMOST NO EFFECT WHEN FIRED AT A CAR, EXCEPT WHEN FIRED THROUGH WINDOWS AT NEAR 90 DEGREE ANGLES. TEAR GAS CANNISTERS FIRED WITH A 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN EASILY PENETRATED THE CAR WINDSHIELD, BUT WERE NOT ABLE TO PENETRATE THE BODY OF THE CAR. TWELVE GAUGE SHOTGUN SLUGS EASILY PENETRATED THE CAR BODY, AND BUCK SHOT WAS FOUND EFFECTIVE IN 'BLOWING OUT' THE GLASS OF THE CAR. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT TEAR GAS SEEMS TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE NON-LETHAL METHOD OF STOPPING A CAR, AND RECOMMENDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DERRINGER TYPE OF FLAT, COMPACT HANDGUN THAT WOULD FIRE A PENETRATING CS GAS PROJECTILE.
