This study investigates the relationship between selected demographic variables, negative social behaviors, and activity participations and the drinking and driving behavioral intention and self-reported practices of Pennsylvania adolescents.
Abstract
Specifically, this study involved grades 6-12 and examined the impact of the following independent variables: gender, grade level, and grade average along with time spent being sent out of the classroom; taking things from a store; staying out all night without parents' permission; and time spent on social activities, on academic activities, on sports activities, on religious activities, on extra-curricular activities, and on vocational activities. Results showed negative social behaviors and social activity participation are critical precursors to the drinking and driving problem among adolescents. Adolescent drinking and driving programs should be based on more concrete evidence of the possible precursors to the drinking and driving problem. Parents, educators, and counselors need to be aware of the various influences on their children which may lead to a drinking and driving event. 5 tables and 8 references. (Author abstract modified)
