BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH ON DIFFERENCES AMONG POLICE OFFICERS AND COLLEGE STUDENTS ON MEASURES OF DOGMATISM, AUTHORITARIANISM, AND BELIEFS ABOUT THE LAW.
Abstract
MEMBERS OF THE INNOVATIVE DEPARTMENT WERE SIGNIFICANTLY LESS AUTHORITARIAN THAN THOSE FROM THE TRADITIONALLY ORIENTED DEPARTMENT, WHILE STUDENTS WERE LESS AUTHORITARIAN THAN ALL POLICE. NO MAJOR DIFFERENCE WAS FOUND BETWEEN STUDENTS OR POLICE DEPARTMENTS ON TESTS OF OPEN MINDEDNESS. BOTH POLICE DEPARTMENTS SHOWED STRONGER POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARD THE LAW AND WERE MORE INCLINED TOWARD THE USE OF PUNISHMENT IN TREATMENT OF CRIMINALS.
