DISCUSSION OF THE PURPOSES OF TEACHING LAW TO SOCIAL WORKERS AND THE CONTENT OF LEGAL STUDIES.
Abstract
THIS STUDY SPANS THREE LEGAL SYSTEMS - THOSE OF ENGLAND AND WALES, SCOTLAND, AND NOTHERN IRELAND. THE REPORT EXPLORES THE SOCIAL WORKER'S RELATIONSHIP TO THE LAW AND ATTEMPTS TO IDENTIFY THE AREAS OF THE LAW THAT A SOCIAL WORKER NEEDS TO KNOW. THE FOUR CATEGORIES OF LAW DISCUSSED ARE PROFESSIONAL LAW, GENERAL LAW, THE ADMINISTRATION OF LAW, AND LAW AND SOCIETY. THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF THE CURRENT STATE OF LEGAL STUDIES IS ALSO PRESENTED ALONG WITH A DISCUSSION OF THE CURRENT POSITION CONCERNING THE TEACHING OF LAW. RESEARCHERS OFFER SOME SUGGESTIONS ON HOW THE TEACHING OF BOTH QUALIFYING COURSES AND POST-ENTRY TRAINING COULD BE STRENGTHENED. DISCUSSED ARE THE CORE CONTENT, SELECTION OF TEACHERS, PROGRAM PLANNING, TEACHING METHODS, AND PRACTICAL WORK PLACEMENTS. AREAS RECOMMENDED FOR FURTHER STUDY INCLUDE THE NEED FOR SOCIAL WORKERS TO HAVE A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF WELFARE RIGHTS, AND THE NEED FOR STUDENTS TO BE TAUGHT TO PREPARE AND SUBMIT REPORTS TO THE COURTS. ALSO NOTED WAS THE NEED TO KEEP THE TEACHING OF LEGAL STUDIES UNDER CONTINUOUS REVIEW, THE APPENDIX CONTAINS A LIST OF RECOMMENDED READING AND REFERENCE MATERIAL AND AN ALPHABETICAL LISTING OF LEGISLATION COMPRISING THE SOCIAL WORKER'S PROFESSIONAL LAW IN ENGLAND AND WALES, SOCTLAND, AND IRELAND.
