The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is responsible for enforcing sentences of imprisonment and for supervising probationers and parolees.
Abstract
Legislation defining the work of the noninstitutional, institutional, and remand prison sectors is based on principles of minimal interference, an outward-reaching approach, proximity of prisoners to their homes, and collaboration between the prison and probation services. There are seven regions under the jurisdiction of the Prison and Probation Service. Remand prisons, regular prisons, and probation districts are under the jurisdiction of the regional management. The Swedish criminal justice system is predicated on the belief that incarceration should be avoided whenever possible. Probation service work is built upon providing courts with presentence reports, preparing inmates for release, and supervising probationers in the community. Prison treatment programs encompass occupational activities, education, work release and substance abuse treatment.
