This report describes the activities and accomplishments of the South Carolina Department of Corrections during fiscal year 1997-98; presents inmate statistics, correctional personnel employment information, and expenditure data; and provides fact sheets about each correctional institution.
Abstract
Major events during the year included State officials' approval of $4.4 million in capital improvement bonds and matching Federal funds for prison construction, organizational restructuring, and the appointment of the first female deputy director. Additional accomplishments included the establishment of the Office of Workforce Relations, the revamping of the Educational Services Division, and the establishment of hospice programs for terminally ill inmates at five institutions. The Department of Corrections spent $330,857,437, of which 61.9 percent went for employee salaries and fringe benefits. The agency's staff of nearly 7,000 was responsible for the care and custody of more than 21,000 inmates in 32 institutions. Photographs and tables
