This article examines new finishes available to protect firearms.
This article reviews EXO, a plating process that has been shown to allow lubrication-free operation of equipment while at the same time having surfaces that are easily cleaned. Testing of EXO by the Department of Defense has shown the coating to be a cost-saving upgrade to firearms by extending the service life of the weapons. The author notes that EXO has been applied successfully to a variety of firearms, including firearms from the Martin County Sheriff's Office in Stuart, FL. In addition to the production of EXO, UCT Coatings, the manufacturer of EXO, has developed FailZero to provide parts and parts kits for a variety of weapons. FailZero, together with the EXO processes, provide law enforcement officers with an economical way to protect firearms from harsh environments while at the same time providing lubricity that allows for firearms to be carried dry and oil free.
