To assess academy and inservice training for personnel in the California prison system, a survey was conducted of 1,425 (overall response rate, 53 percent) correctional staff members in 3 prisons.
          Abstract
The three prisons were the California Mens Colony (CMC) at San Luis Obispo, the California Institution for Men (CIM) at Chino, and the California Institution for Women (CIW) at Frontera. Questionnaire items were designed to assess attitudes toward various types of training and to identify factors that affect attitudes toward training. Overall, staff evaluated academy and inservice training positively and found these training programs useful in their jobs. Custodial staff, blacks, and newer staff members had the next positive evaluations of training. These findings are discussed in the context of the custody orientation that pervades academy and inservice training in California. It is concluded that these training programs are effective for the largest group of recipients -- correctional officers. 4 data tables and 8 footnotes. (Author abstract modified)
