Standards for Service for Abused or Neglected Children and Their Families

NCJ Number

The Child Welfare League of American (CWLA) published these standards as a way to ensure the continuing improvement of service for abused and neglected children and their families. They represent what are believed to be ideal practices in providing services that the community offers through various agencies.
Abstract
The standards are divided into six sections: protective services for children abused or neglected by their families, social work in child protective service, role of the court in protecting children, organization and administration of the child protective service agency, protecting children outside the family, and protecting children as a community responsibility. Standards are useful in planning, organizing, and administering services; in establishing licensing requirements; and in setting accreditation criteria. They can provide material for teaching and training in child welfare and related fields and can assist in budget-related functions. Standards can also help gain greater public interest, understanding, and support for providing services, targeting legislation, and improving financing.
