Abstract
THIS REPORT IS BASED ON DATA SOLICITED FROM THE CHIEF JUSTICES OF THE SEVERAL STATE COURTS OF LAST RESORT AND FROM COURT ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS NOW OPERATING IN CLOSE TO FORTY-FIVE STATES. THE DATA ARE PRESENTED IN FIFTEEN TABLES, EACH CONTAINING INDIVIDUAL STATE DATA IN NUMERICAL AND NARRATIVE FORM. THE FIRST TABLE GIVES THE NAMES OF COURTS IN THE STATES AND NUMBERS OF JUDGES OF APPELLATE COURTS AND TRIAL COURTS OF GENERAL JURISDICTION. THE NEXT THREE PROVIDE INFORMATION ON JUDGE SELECTION, QUALIFICATION, AND TERM LENGTHS IN APPELLATE AND TRIAL COURTS. TABLES FIVE THROUGH EIGHT COVER COMPENSATION, RETIREMENT AND PENSION PROVISIONS, AND DIRECT RETIREMENTS BENEFITS FOR SURVIVING SPOUSES AND OTHER DEPENDENTS OF JUDGES. THE NEXT TABLE LISTS METHODS FOR REMOVAL OF JUDGES AND FILLING OF VACANCIES, FOLLOWED BY A TABLE PROVIDING INFORMATION ON THE STATE COURT OF LAST RESORT, INCLUDING ITS NAME, METHOD OF SELECTION OF JUSTICES, AND THE METHOD OF SELECTION AND TERM OF THE CHIEF JUSTICE. THE FINAL FIVE TABLES SET OUT DATA ON THE ADMINISTRATIVE AND SUPPORT SERVICES AVAILABLE TO THE STATE COURT SYSTEM, INCLUDING INFORMATION ON COURT ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES AND LEGAL AND CLERICAL ASSISTANCE.
