This 11th annual statistical report presents data about the extent and nature of juvenile activity and the response of the Texas juvenile probation system.
Abstract
Police agencies in Texas arrested 131,201 juveniles between the ages of 10 and 17 during 1991. Of this number, 34,299 were warned and released or handled in magistrate courts or diverted, and 96,902 were referred to juvenile probation departments. Another 8,763 juveniles were referred by social agencies, parents, schools, the Texas Youth Commission, and others. The number of juvenile probation officers totaled 1,276. In 1991, 32,287 juveniles were detained prior to adjudication hearings. Juvenile probation departments disposed of 53,237 cases by counseling and releasing, diverting to other agencies for treatment, or dismissing the complaints, and initiated 36,815 voluntary or other temporary supervisions. Juvenile courts entered 11,651 probation orders and committed 2,230 juveniles to the Texas Youth Commission, certified 208 juveniles to stand trial as adults, and refused prosecution, dismissed, consolidated, or otherwise disposed of another 17,106 cases. 13 figures and 1 appendix
