This report presents 1992 statistics of deaths reported to coroners in England and Wales.
Abstract
The number of deaths reported to coroners during 1992 was 179,000, a decrease of about 2,500 from the previous year. There was a corresponding decrease in the total number of deaths registered in England and Wales during that year. The proportion of all registered deaths reported to the coroner remained constant at 32 percent. About 71 percent of deaths reported to coroners resulted in a postmortem, and inquests were held on 21,000 deaths, under 12 percent of all deaths reported to coroners. Deaths by accident or misadventure accounted for nearly half of inquest verdicts, while suicide accounted for an additional 20 percent. 6 tables, 5 figures, and 6 notes
