The coroner system in New South Wales (NSW) is comprised of a State Coroner and a Deputy State Coroner who are responsible for implementing the Coroners Act and for collaborating with the NSW Police Service in the conduct of inquests.
Abstract
The advent of the State Coroner has been important for several reasons. First, the office has an educative role in providing forensic advice to coroners throughout NSW. Second, it has a supervisory role with respect to coroners in NSW. Third, the office is responsible for implementing the Coroners Act of 1980, specifically for holding an inquest concerning the death or suspected death of a person. In NSW, coroners are not bound by rules of evidence and procedures are informal, and the sheer volume of work makes it impossible for coroners to personally investigate matters. Therefore, police officers of the NSW Police Service are in effect the coroner's investigators. 8 endnotes
