STRATEGIES FOR CONFRONTING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: A RESOURCE MANUAL

NCJ Number

Length

This manual describes the nature and extent of domestic assault, particularly violence against women, and describes strategies that governments, police, social service agencies, health workers, community organizations, and women's groups around the world are using to address violence perpetrated by males against their wives and female partners.
Abstract
The discussion notes that strategies that are successful in addressing domestic assault in one national or cultural context may not necessarily be suitable in other contexts and that each country will use a different strategy to confront the problem. It also emphasizes that cooperation is central to success and that a criminal justice approach can be successful only if it is integrated into other strategies. Thus, the criminal justice system must work with health, education, social, and community services. In addition, the public must support strategies for addressing domestic assault. Information is provided regarding action by the police, prosecutors, health service workers, social service workers, women's groups, and government agencies. Research efforts and efforts to share information are also summarized. 205 reference notes
