The articles in this journal focus on how to provide effective social, emotional, and psychological support for youth, with attention to the efforts of the Communities In Schools (CIS) Program, which endeavors to bring needed mental health resources from the community into the schools.
Abstract
An article on "The Integration of Mental Health Services and Schools" examines the debate surrounding the addition of mental health services to school-based student resources. It considers the current status of school-based mental health services, two current models of school mental health services (Memphis, TN, and Kentucky), and future directions for school-based mental health services. The authors advise that it is up to parents, educators, mental health professionals, and students to lobby for the widespread adoption of school-based mental health models. In another article, an overview is provided of mental health statistics for children, with attention to the number of unserved children, the serious consequences of failing to treat children's cognitive and emotional disorders, and the characteristics of effective mental health services for children. An article profiles the school mental health services in three CIS communities: South Carolina; Waterloo, Iowa; and Chicago. Other articles discuss depression among youth; the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative, which provides Federal funding for comprehensive community strategies for creating safe and drug-free schools and the promotion of healthy childhood development; and mental health resources for children on the Web.
