Abstract
ITS OVERALL PURPOSE WAS TO DETERMINE THE NATURE AND MAGNITUDE OF THE HOT PURSUIT PROBLEM NATIONALLY AND TO PREPARE GUIDELINES TO ASSIST THE POLICE IN DEALING WITH IT. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES WERE TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS - THE NATURE OF THE LAW REGARDING HOT PURSUIT AND ITS INTERPRETATION BY THE COURTS, (2) THE NUMBER OF HIGH-SPEED PURSUITS OCCURRING ON A NATIONAL BASIS AND THE OPERATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS, CONSEQUENCES AND RISKS OF SUCH INCIDENTS, (3) POLICE AGENCIES' TRANSLATION OF THE LAW INTO OPERATIONAL POLICY, (4) THE NATURE OF POLICE TRAINING FOR OPERATING A VEHICLE DURING HOT PURSUIT, (5) THE AVAILABLITY OF EXISTING AND POTENIAL COUNTERMEASURES AND THEIR MERITS AND DEFICIENCIES.
