Information from a questionnaire survey of 682 junior high school students and 883 senior high school students in Japan formed the basis of an analysis of the relationship between a youth's bonds with school and delinquency and of the factors that influence the bond with the school.
Abstract
The questionnaire used 3-point scales to gather data on self-reported bonds with school and records of delinquency and other misbehavior. Results showed that approximately 10 percent of the youths had committed delinquent acts and 50 percent had committed less serious acts of misbehavior in the last year. In addition, a weaker bond with school was associated with greater involvement in delinquency and misbehavior. Those who expressed strong bonds with school reported enjoying school life, establishing good relationships with their teachers, participating in extracurricular activities, studying hard, and feeling strong ties with family. Results indicated that a strong bond with school is an element in a strong bond to society and helps prevent deviant behaviors. Tables (Author abstract modified)
