ANALYSIS OF THE SUBJECTIVE EVALUATION OF THE PROBABILITY OF BECOMING A ROBBERY OR BURGLARY VICTIM AS A FUNCTION OF THE CRIME LEVEL IN THE POTENTIAL VICTIM'S NEIGHBORHOOD.
Abstract
USING 763 INDIVIDUALS WHO HAD BEEN VICTIMIZED ONCE, THE STUDY INDICATED A SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CRIME LEVELS AND SUBJECTIVE EVALUATIONS OF POTENTIAL VICTIMIZATION. THERE APPEARED TO BE NO SYSTEMATIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPECIFIC VICTIMIZATION AND SPECIFIC SUBJECTIVE PROBABILITY. IN THE CASE OF ROBBERY, PREVIOUS VICTIMS OF THIS OFFENSE HAD HIGHER SUBJECTIVE EVALUATIONS THAN DID NONROBBERY VICTIMS. FOR BURGLARY AND BURGLARY VICTIMS, HOWEVER, THE RELATIONSHIP IS REVERSED.
