This volume examines connections between the fields of substance abuse and child welfare.
Abstract
The volume presents data in nine chapters that discuss: (1) a selected literary and social history of substance abuse and child abuse; (2) the consequences of exposure to drugs and to the child welfare system; (3) the gap between substance abuse programs and child welfare services; (4) premises, programs and policies in child welfare and substance abuse; (5) bridges between child welfare and substance abuse; (6) bridging the gap for children as their parents enter substance abuse treatment; (7) barriers and collaboration between child welfare and substance abuse services; (8) family therapy and family psychoeducational interventions with maltreating and substance-abusing families; and (9) some cautionary notes regarding prevention issues. The book is directed toward policymakers, graduate students, and practitioners in the fields of child welfare and substance abuse. It provides findings of possible use to policymakers in crafting laws to fill the gap between the two fields, and to students and practitioners to encourage and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration.
