The Colorado Department of Health's Injury Prevention and Control Program has responded to the challenge of family violence prevention by developing hospital protocols for spousal and elder abuse victims.
          Abstract
Hospitals play a vital role in identifying and intervening with family violence victims, but community organizations must also be willing to work with hospitals to develop an integrated approach to violence prevention. The suggested protocols for domestic violence victims and for elderly or disabled abuse victims identify the protocol's purpose and rationale and relevant Colorado law. Protocol sections also deal with recognition, examination, reporting, documentation, treatment, and aftercare. Model protocols from Denver area hospitals are included.
