Abstract
The Sumter Correctional Institution aims to rehabilitate youthful offenders and prevent recidivism through a short period of incarceration and a setting of military discipline. It is intended as a program of diversion from longer-term incarceration. The program includes marching drills, physical training, drug treatment, counseling, and a work component. The shock incarceration unit is separate from the general inmate population and is staffed by personnel with specialized training.
