This British study provides the addresses and brief descriptions of Internet websites that focus on crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED).
Abstract
The majority of websites committed to CPTED are in five general categories: central government, local government, academic, professional associations/organizations, and international. In discussing the websites in these categories, attention is given to those that focus on crime and housing design or environmental design with CPTED principles in England and Wales. The Home Office pages (central government) inform the researcher or practitioner on the extent to which design techniques are used in crime prevention and present information in a comprehensive and balanced manner. Sites under the "local government" category tend to present a local authority's policy on secure design and how it is to be applied in planning applications. Another avenue through which to find a wealth of information on the use of design techniques in the construction of housing areas is to access the website of professional bodies, such as the Secured by Design scheme site of the Association of Chief Police Officers. Academic sites also provide relevant information and reference points for students, practitioners, and researchers. International sites generate a wider range of information, data, and case studies on CPTED. Since the use of design and situational approaches toward crime prevention originated in the United States, it is not surprising to find a wide array of U.S. sites devoted to the principles of CPTED. Specific website addresses and descriptions are provided in each category of websites discussed. 4 notes
