This report presents the range of salaries paid to police officers in the United States, as well as statistics on allowances for hospitalization, sick leave, holidays, and other areas reflecting police working conditions.
Abstract
These data are given for cities from under 10,000 population to those with over 1 million people; for State police and highway patrols; and for select counties, cities, and campus police. The minimum and maximum salaries are given for the position of chief of police, captain, lieutenant, sergeant, detective, and patrol officer. The years required between mimimum and maximum salaries are also included, if applicable. The report indicates whether longevity pay, overtime compensation, civil service status, shift differential pay, and residency requirements are applicable in the cities and other areas surveyed. Also documented by city or other area are the number of uniformed police and detectives, the hours per week required, the annual vacation period (mimimum to maximum), the number of paid holidays, annual clothing allowances, and the amount of paid hospitalization. The report gives the number of annual sick leave days, the amount of life insurance contributed by employer, the monthly pension, the minimum years of service required to receive a pension, the minimum age required to receive a regular pension, and the compulsory retirement age.
