The Syracuse Police Department (New York) emphasizes public and police education in its community relations and crime prevention efforts.
Abstract
The department, with Federal and local involvement, coordinates and instructs a basic police officer course lasting 15-16 weeks. Officers must qualify in weapons training every 3 months. They must also take a stress management course dealing with street stress and personal problems. The department will pay for three psychological consultations per year by psychiatrists on retainer by the department. New officers receive first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training. The department has added to its five major training programs basic crowd control and management team training, a defensive driving course, and an advanced crowd control course. The department has an effective Crime Prevention Division, a Narcotics Section, a Vice Enforcement Section, and other units. More educational programs and computer-assisted operations are planned for the future. No data tables are included.
