This articles examines the problem of anti-social behavior of youth in Rotterdam (Netherlands)
Abstract
Preventive interventions for reducing anti-social behavior in youth are generally set in urban contexts. This article contains basic proposals about where to begin with preventive activities (areas with high prevalence), which underlying factors to target (risk factors), and what gains these interventions may yield (Attributable Fractions (AF)). This is a cross-sectional study of anti-social behavior among 5657 youth (12-15 years) who live in 55 neighborhoods within 11 boroughs in Rotterdam (the Netherlands). The prevalence of anti-social behavior, the risk factors and AF are analyzed on three levels (neighborhood, borough and city). This article addresses ways to tackle anti-social behavior effectively through social crime prevention. We focus on specific problem areas, identify the risk factors associated with these areas, and put together a package of preventive policies and interventions aimed at addressing these.
