In the belief that prevention is the most significant way to curb future crime, this book instructs parents in how to instill respect for the law in their children by teaching them about the consequences of crime and the workings of the criminal justice system.
Abstract
Suggestions are offered for teaching children values and laws and for encouraging them by society's rules. Several chapters discuss the behaviors by which juveniles most commonly break the law. These include loitering and prowling, trespass, vandalism -- criminal mischief, death on the highway, resisting arrest, carrying concealed weapons, larceny-theft, store theft and shoplifting, motor vehicle theft, burglary, assault and battery, aggravated assault, and arson. Also examined are the issues of minors and alcohol, illegal drugs, robbery, and homicide. The function of the juvenile justice system is reviewed. The final chapter is devoted to juvenile corrections, emphasizing that crime does not pay. The bulk of the material is presented in question-and-answer form to facilitate family discussion. Illustrations are provided. The appendix contains a glossary of legal terms and a list of drug and slang terms.
