STUDY COMPARING SELF-PERCEPTIONS OF DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR BY WEST GERMAN ADOLESCENTS WITH THE PERCEPTIONS OF IT BY THEIR TEACHERS AS INFLUENCED BY CAUSAL ASSUMPTIONS.
Abstract
THE STUDY INVOLVED 161 MALE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS WITH AN AVERAGE AGE OF 14. EACH STUDENT AND HIS TEACHER RATED THE LEVEL OF THE STUDENT'S DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR, WITH THE STUDENT'S RATING OF HIS OWN BEHAVIOR BEING TAKEN AS A FACTUAL DESCRIPTION. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS SOME CORRELATION BETWEEN THE TEACHERS' RATINGS AND THE FACTUAL DESCRIPTIONS, THE VARIATIONS CORRELATED WITH CERTAIN SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STUDENTS, SUCH AS SOCIAL CLASS, NUMBER OF SIBLINGS, AND FAMILY ORGANIZATION. THE CORRELATION OF SUCH FACTORS IS HYPOTHESIZED BY THE STUDY TO INDICATE IMPLICIT THEORIES ABOUT THE SOCIAL CAUSES OF DELINQUENCY IN THE MINDS OF THE TEACHERS WHICH INFLUENCE THEIR EVALUATIONS OF THE STUDENTS' BEHAVIOR. INCLUDED IS A DESCRIPTION OF THE DESIGN OF THE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS. --IN GERMAN
